PROFILE
Joy is a respected lawyer who has shifted her practice to that of full time neutral work.
Joy is a fully qualified Ottawa-based mediator and arbitrator, and is available to mediate and/or arbitrate a variety of cases including human rights issues, employment law, labour and commercial matters.
In addition to mediation and arbitration work, Joy is also regularly retained to conduct and/or oversee workplace investigations involving issues ranging from conflicts of interest, intimidation and abuse of power, senior level mismanagement issues, to sexual harassment.
Before becoming a full time neutral Joy was a partner in a large national law firm, and moved to Ottawa from Toronto in 1999 to open and anchor a new Ottawa office for that firm. The experience gave Joy an additional level of insight into the daily issues involved in managing and this, together with having been the head of the Ottawa labour/employment and administrative law group while in private practice, gives her substantial depth in terms of the advice and support she can offer our clients. In her past life as a full time lawyer, Joy also acted as lead counsel and advocate at all levels of the Ontario and Federal court systems focusing on administrative law, employment law and human rights issues. She has also acted as external counsel for the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
Joy regularly lectures on human rights and employment-related issues. While not an exhaustive list, she has been the Co-chair and speaker at the Woman in Leadership Conference in Ottawa, Fall 2007; the Co-chair at the annual Lancaster House conference on Human Rights and Privacy in Toronto, 2007; the Co-chair and speaker at the Women in Law national conference in Ottawa, 2006; a Speaker at the Montebello Solicitor's Conference 2006 on employment law; a Speaker at the Oxford University Roundtable on International Employment and Human Rights in 2003 and 2004; and a Speaker at CASHRA 2002 Conference on "Human Rights at Work".
Joy earned her LL.B. at Dalhousie University in 1989 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1991. She was the recipient of the Smith Shield prize (top mooter/debater) and the Arthur S. Pattillo prize for Advocacy while at Dalhousie. While earning her law degree Joy also worked as the University Ombudsperson.
Joy has two wonderful young daughters who help to keep her life hopping – but just to fill her plate a little more, Joy is also presently enrolled in the Part-Time Masters of Laws (LL.M.) program specializing in Alternative Dispute Resolution at Osgoode Hall, York University and is part of the new Task Force examining mandatory mediation in Ontario. Joy also sits on the Board of Directors for the Children’s Wish Foundation (NCC), and the Board of Directors for the Westboro Academy/Académie Westboro in Ottawa.
With offices in Ottawa and Toronto.
